​A hammer throw can be thrown over the defense into a teammate’s hands. It is highly effective to use when the stall count is at 8 or 9 and you cannot get off a regular huck. The grip for a hammer is the same as a regular forehand, however you will be throwing the disc almost vertically over your head and it should end completely down on its face.

ARM AND WRIST MOTION

Hold the disc with a forehand grip and turn it to be vertical with the top of the disc parallel to the dominant side of your face with your elbow bent. Tilt the top of the disc towards your head at a slight angle, pull back the disc, then propel your arm forward and slice downwards. Your chest should be pointed up towards the sky throughout the arm motion. Additionally, your wrist should be flicking down. You want the same emphasis on the wrist that a regular flick has, but your wrist will be angled instead of flat. You also want to release the disc above your head, not as your arm is slicing downwards.

fOOTWORK

There are two options for footwork with a hammer. You can throw a hammer from a regular flick position, or you can throw from a power position. For a power position, begin with your feet slightly further than shoulder width apart and step your dominant foot back. Both feet will be facing forwards. When you throw, your weight will shift from your dominant foot into your pivot foot, and you will end up on the ball of your dominant foot. This position has more control and power than a regular flick standing position. 

TIPS

  1. Practice throwing a ball overhead in order to get the arm motion down. 
  2. If the disc corkscrews (switches direction in the air), decrease the angle you are throwing the disc at. 
  3. Larger angles are used for shorter ranges, and shorter angles for longer ranges.
